West Lafayette Police Department

The West Lafayette Police Department serves this Tippecanoe County city and handles all public records requests for incidents inside city limits. The department's website is at westlafayette.in.gov/government/police-department. The Records Division is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Outside of those hours, non-emergency matters should be directed to the non-emergency line or saved for the next business day.

One thing to understand about West Lafayette is that Purdue University also has its own police department. Purdue Police patrol the campus separately from West Lafayette PD. If an incident happened on Purdue's campus, the Purdue University Police hold those records, not WLPD. For campus incidents, contact the Purdue University Police public records request page through the Office of Legal Counsel. This is an important distinction. Many calls in the area can fall under either agency depending on the location.

West Lafayette is not the same as Lafayette. The two cities share a county and sit across the Wabash River from each other, but they are distinct cities with separate police departments. If you're looking for blotter data from Lafayette, go to the Lafayette city page instead. This page covers West Lafayette incidents only.

How to Request West Lafayette Police Records

Indiana's Access to Public Records Act (APRA) at Indiana Code § 5-14-3 gives you the right to request West Lafayette police blotter records. You don't need to give a reason. Agencies must acknowledge written requests within seven days. In-person and verbal requests get a response within 24 hours.

West Lafayette now uses a dedicated online portal called NextRequest for public records requests. The city says this system makes the process more efficient by tracking requests and responses in one place. You can submit your request through the city's public records request page, which links to the NextRequest portal. This is the recommended method. It creates a record of your request and gives you a tracking number to follow up on.

You can also email requests directly to records@wl.in.gov. Fill out the request form, available on the police department records page, and attach it to your email. Staff will respond with what they can provide and any applicable fees. If you prefer to go in person, visit the Records Division during business hours on weekdays. Bring a photo ID and any report numbers you have to speed things up.

Note: Fees for West Lafayette records requests are not published online. Contact the department at the records email to get a cost estimate before submitting.

Online Portals and Blotter Access

West Lafayette uses NextRequest as its central public records portal. This system covers multiple city departments, not just police. You can submit a records request, track its status, and receive documents through this secure platform. Access it through the public records request page on the city's website. The city updated to this system to improve transparency and tracking, so it's worth using rather than going straight to email.

Court records for West Lafayette cases are available through the Odyssey Case Management system, which feeds into Indiana's MyCase portal. This covers criminal and civil filings in Tippecanoe County courts. It is separate from police blotter records but shows what happened after arrests were made.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff

The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office covers unincorporated parts of the county and maintains records for incidents outside West Lafayette and Lafayette city limits. If an incident happened on a county road or in a rural area near West Lafayette, the Sheriff may hold the primary report. The Sheriff also runs the county jail, so booking records for West Lafayette arrests may be available through the county.

West Lafayette city incidents belong to WLPD. County road and rural incidents belong to the Sheriff. Purdue campus incidents belong to Purdue Police. Make sure you know which agency handled the call before you request records. The Sheriff's contact information and records process are covered on the Tippecanoe County page.

Court Records Connected to West Lafayette Blotter

When West Lafayette police blotter entries lead to criminal charges, those cases land in Tippecanoe County courts. Search them for free through MyCase. The system shows case filings, charges, court dates, and final outcomes. Search by name or case number to trace a police incident through to its court result. This is public information and does not require a formal records request.

Police blotter records and court records are different documents. The blotter entry comes from WLPD. The court case comes from the court clerk. You need separate requests or searches to get both. MyCase handles the court side for free. For the blotter data itself, use the NextRequest portal or email the Records Division.

For accidents on state roads or highways running through the area, Indiana State Police may hold the primary report. ISP reports are also on BuyCrash.
